It’s Anthony’s last day of his vacation from the UAE National Day holiday, so we wanted to do something fun before he goes back to work for the week.
We decided that we wanted to try taking Micah to the movies, since now he sits through entire films. His favorites are all Disney movies, of course: UP, Beauty and the Beast, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and Frozen. He also loved Wreck It Ralph, Peter Pan, and, far far away from Disneyland, Shrek!
We live close to the Marina Mall, so we went to the first showing of “Big Hero 6,” the new Disney movie.
I didn’t really know what the movie was about and didn’t think I was going to be able to see it in theaters, but we took a chance that it would be good and Micah would sit through it.
Our introduction to the movie theater was a bit scary.
When we got to the ticket line, there was a really angry man yelling at the workers and hitting his fist against the counter. From what I understood, as a casually eavesdropping bystander, the man was FURIOUS that the showtimes that were online were different from what was actually available. He kept yelling, “Why do you post online if it’s not true?! Why do you do this?! Huh? WHY!??!?!?!??!?!?!” Whew! It was scary. The manager and the other ticket sellers just avoided eye contact and kept quietly apologizing. I couldn’t believe that they let him go on like that. I feel like if that happened back home, security would have been called and escorted that guy out of the mall immediately. But here, things are different.
We ordered our tickets as we tried to ignore the man yelling in our ears next to us and chose our seats. Apparently, we were getting “premier” service, which includes super reclining seats with tables and food delivery to your seat. Anthony & I paid 55 AED for our tickets, about $15 each, so it wasn’t a cheap date but we won’t be going to the movies often while we’re over here anyway. We got chicken strips, fries, and a Coke for 38 AED (a little over $10) and they delivered it to us during the movie. That felt fancy! They even offered us pillows and blankets!
Interestingly, before the film began, they didn’t play traditional movie trailers. They played commercials advertising events happening around Dubai and some car commercials. That went on for about 10 minutes and then Disney took over! Before the film started, they played a cute short called “Feast,” about what a dog eats as he grows up. I couldn’t help but stare at Micah’s face as he watched it, smiling and giggling at the puppy’s antics. Too cute! Read more about “Feast” here.
So far, so good.
Then the movie started!
I can’t say enough about how good it was! The characters were really funny, and I just adored Baymax, the robot! As is true Disney fashion, they had me practically sobbing in my seat a couple of times. They know how to pull my heart strings! Micah started punching and jabbing the air along with Baymax during fight scenes, so hopefully he doesn’t start hitting at home… but I think we’ll be fine! 🙂
All in all, Micah’s first trip to the movies was a SUCCESS. As we walked out of the theater, he cheered for himself, “Yay, Micah! You did a good job!” Oh, and make sure you stay until the end of the credits for some really cool footage. I absolutely loved this movie and can’t wait to buy it when it’s released on Blu-Ray! Until then, I need to get
myself Micah a Baymax doll. ❤
